In today's environment, this is often no longer the case.
You may be surprised by how much the rate drops by paying a point or two.
Ask your loan representative for some quotes with and without points.

In today's environment, a short term lock is often priced much more aggressively.
Ask your loan representative about locking your rate 'after' the loan has been approved, and just prior to closing.
You may be surprised at the rate differential.
